AFV: America's Funniest Videos

Although not stand-up comedy as my previous posts, I feel this show needs some recognition because we can all agree, seeing others fall on their asses is funny as hell.

AFV was actually based off a Japanese show, "Fun TV". Bob Saget was the original host, now currently hosted by Dancing With the Stars host, Tom Bergeron.

Jeff Dunham

A favorite among many, Jeff Dunham is an American Ventriloquist and stand up comedian who has also appeared on numerous shows and is one of the top-grossing stand up acts and is successful in Europe as well. He is known for reviving the art of ventriloquism using several characters he created for his comedy act. He is the third highest paid comedian in the US behind Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock.

Dunham uses several puppets, all of which have a unique personality, often times representing a stereotype. In his acts he uses Peanut (in above pic), Walter the grumpy old Vietnam war veteran, Jose the Jalapeno on a Stick, a Latin Jalapeno... on a stick, Achmed the Dead Terrorist (SILENCE! I KILL YOU!), Bubba J the red neck, Sweet Daddy Dee the P.I.M.P., and Melvin the Super hero guy who makes fun of other heroes (and seems to have x-ray vision).

George Carlin 1937 - 2008

Perhaps one of the most well known and well renowned stand up comedians is none other than George Denis Patrick Carlin (more commonly known as simply George Carlin). Carlin won five Grammy Awards for his comedy albums, and the first of his 14 comedy specials on HBO was first aired in 1977. Carlin was the king of dark humor, and often times noted on politics, American culture, religion, and other taboo topics. Carlin placed second in Comedy Central's Top 100 comedians of all time behind Richard Pryor. He also hosted the first Saturday Night Live.

One of the most famous pieces is the "Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on Television"

Although raised as Roman Catholic, Carlin became atheist and often denounced the idea of God in several of his routines, most notably in "You Are All Diseased". Check out this youtube video.

George Carlin's comedic themes often revolved around "observational humor" (George Carlin talks about Stuff and Similarities), "social commentary", and the English language, all of which revolve around his theme of "humanity's bullshit". During his "Life is Worth Losing" show, he gave this statement:

"I look at it this way... For centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers... so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it's natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse."

Carlin's career as a comedian, actor, and author began in 1956 til June 22, 2008 when he died of heart failure.

About The Blog

Hello any viewers. Or myself, considering I'll probably be the one reading and editing this. They say laughter is the best medicine, and in many ways, that statement is true. Laughing makes one feel good, it is part of an unconscious human behavior, and a signals acceptance and positive interactions with others. There are hundreds of different languages throughout the world, but laughter is pretty much the same anywhere one can go.

That being said, prepare to laugh because in this blog I will feature stand up comedians and other random comical tidbits I find. I will feature videos and info of several different comedians of the past and present. I will also find some not so well known comedians and feature them and their work as well. Expect some best moments, shocking facts, and a barrel of laughs.
